Are You a Brand Imposter?

Recently, I was flipping through the myriad of cable channels and I came across a reality show (shall remain nameless) and the main person is a budding international entertainer – every bit of eight years old. Despite the girl’s age, her mother says that she wants her daughter to be the next Beyonce. For all intents and purposes, I get it. She wants her daughter to achieve the fame and fortune of Beyonce; although, there are a lot of demands and pressures that come from having a persona like Beyonce’s. The problem isn’t in having an inspiration to look up to, rather the problem is that the mother is not encouraging her daughter to live in her authenticity and develop her own brand. How many times have you sacrificed or traded in your authentic self to satisfy the brand labels that others have put upon you? Or perhaps,

The “F” Word

The “F” Word
Today, I’m denouncing the “F” word! You read it right. I know what you are thinking! It’s about time someone addressed the awkwardness the “F” word causes in the workplace. It is used frequently in staff meetings, annual reviews and sometimes from customers. But the most hurtful thing about it, they are probably using it to describe you. How annoying can it get, right? Well, just like you, I feel that is not okay to just say the “F” word to anyone when they share something that should be acknowledged with a different word. The best responses should compliment and confirm the value one brings to a work environment, project or client resolutions. Someone’s experience of you should be punctuated with brand personas like achiever, authority or entrepreneur or even words that identify your leadership competencies like visioning, evaluating and deciding. Maybe even attesting to your

When It’s Time to Leave an Unfulfilling Relationship

Do you remember, in the beginning of your relationship, how you loved being together, how your eyes would light up at the thought of the new activities and adventures you would have, how you would say “thank you” when people said the two of you do so well together, and how you felt so complete and purposeful? Good, you remember, because I’m talking about your job! If you are no longer feeling the joy and satisfaction of being together, then it is time to break up! Here are some tips to check if it’s over between you and your employer: It’s not you, it’s the profession. Professional environments often create silo mentalities when it comes to outside industry resources and tools. Refresh Your Resume for 2014

The resume as we know it is dead! In the past, an updated resume consisted of adding a new position, a new job title, or updating additional responsibilities. Today’s job market demands more than a few lines and some added duties. Resumes still play a major role as one of your staple career communication documents. In this case, refresh simply means saying something old in a new and relevant way with current market language to showcase your value. Your resume is your marketing brochure, and it should be fresh at all times. Here are seven ways refresh your resume: Delete Your Home Address. Don’t want to tell where you live? Then don’t. It is completely appropriate to just put your name, email address, and cell phone number on your resume. Today’s professionals pursue career opportunities without zip code boundaries. The Art of Relationship Networking with Current and Former Colleagues

The Art of Relationship Networking with Current and Former Colleagues
Most times, when we hear the word networking, we automatically imagine ourselves at a networking event dressed up in a suit, meeting strangers and feeling awkward while trying to make small talk. Or perhaps we think about our social networking presence on LinkedIn or Facebook and we cringe at the idea of connecting with colleagues outside of work. Relationship networking is a little different and closer to home, so to speak. It is built on the premise of people with whom we share common values and interests. Therefore, we don’t have to find reasons to connect; we just need to talk and build relationships based on our commonalities. Work environments are the perfect place for networking opportunities and building relationships with trusted contacts. Often, we take for granted our colleagues and negate the opportunity of building stronger, resourceful and informative relationships. Relationship management is a key component to career
