Career Reinvention Essentials!

Explore Your Performance History to Develop Your Personal Brand

If you need help developing your personal brand don’t worry! Your work speaks for you and is an integral part of your professional brand. What things do people say about you based on the work you do? This question is a good starting point for figuring out what your professional brand is. Another thing to keep in mind when developing your personal brand is the message you want to communicate.

When thinking of your professional brand, consider yourself as a complete package. You can break that package down into pieces. Start by thinking about how you dress. Is what you wear in alignment with who you are as a person? Does what you wear match how you want to be perceived? If you want to be perceived as confident but are hiding behind oversized clothes, you have to stop. Read our article about dressing for success here. Think about clothes that fit your personality and communicate who you are. If you have no idea what that is then go to a local department store and see what grabs your attention. You can start by developing your style based on what naturally gets your attention. Ask a store attendant for help if you need it or ask a more fashion savvy friend to come with you. Take a look at a few magazines to see if you can get some inspiration from them.

Personal Brand

Do some journaling. Write down your feelings about your work. Be honest even if your work isn’t where you want it to be today. Do an honest appraisal so that you can really be certain of your strengths and weaknesses. Once you have done an honest assessment you will have a better idea of how you are perceived by the people around you. Brainstorm and think of ways to improve any areas of weakness you might have. You can also ask your friends, family, and co-workers how they perceive you to make sure you are really being honest with yourself. If you receive constructive criticism take it as feedback that will help you get better in the future.

Write a mission statement that is in alignment with who you are or who you want to be. If you are not already living in alignment with who you are and what you want to do with your life then it’s time to start. You might find that shifting your alignment and living in a way that reflects your personal brand is life changing. Living true to who you are and your personal brand is not only about work. It’s about your life. If you are brave enough to live according to your personal brand, you might find yourself doing things you never thought you could before and growing in ways you never even considered.
